Paul Burford was one of my best friends in High School. Paul had an offbeat  sense of humor that ranged from the George Washington costume he wore to prom to, dare I say , his alleged participation in our having to evacuate the school a couple of times due to smoke in the halls. (Might have been Army issue smoke grenades.) I remember having an old 1923 T-bucket hot rod we constantly rode around in, racing, getting in trouble with the MP’s at Ft. Harrison, and making friends with the Lawrence cops.  After High School Paul worked for a few years as a Dorm Counselor at the Indiana School for the Deaf, and in early 74’ moved to Phoenix, Arizona with Jim and Jack Redus. (Jim and Jack, the “hair twins” from the class of 70’, are both gone too.) Bill Nolan, his girlfriend, and I drove out to see Paul for Christmas in 74’, and I moved in with him for a few months in 75’. The last time I saw Paul was in 85’. He had come home for a visit, and as it is with old friends, we talked and joked as if we had seen each other the day before. I heard of Paul’s passing in the mid nineties. He was a good friend and a good man. I miss him very much.

Paul was a great guy -- larger than life, both literally and figuratively. My favorite memory of him is when a bunch of us made a road trib to Mammoth Cave. There were about eight of us, and we rented a cabin on the park grounds. Good times ensued. ;) Paul's big heart, his sense of humor, and his love for the joys of life made him the life of that party and of many others.

After high school, Paul worked for a while at the Indiana School for the Deaf. He lived on the grounds, and I visited him there a few times, along with Jim Redus, his  twin brother Jack (both LCHS class of 1970), and some others from our circle of friends. To this day I remember Paul's kindness and concern for the deaf kids in his care.

It was a shock to learn of Paul's death at age 41 from heart failure. I got the news several years ago, from Jim Redus. Jimmie was one of my best friends, and my oldest friend (since I was 14). He passed away on Feb. 28, 2009. Jack Redus died in 1988.

I miss Paul, and Jim, and Jack. Even though the mirror tells me I've been on this earth for a good many years now, still I feel in some way too young to have so many friends who have passed on. Paul's life reminds me that life is to be lived to the fullest; his untimely death reminds me that every hour is precious.

I remember Paul Burford at Harrison Hill Elementary School.  He sat behind me in our 3rd grade class, always teasing me, & making me laugh.  He was very funny and fun to know.
